I believe that everyone has the ability to grow and achieve their goals. Sometimes it's harder than others. I work with people who want to cultivate real change in their lives, whether that's learning to manage depression or anxiety, getting along better with other people or their partners, or helping them accomplish that career goal they desire. I believe that establishing a good connection with my clients and creating manageable and growth-oriented goals can lead to lasting positive change.

Sometimes, when we feel anxious or depressed, life can appear to come to a standstill. The rest of the world is moving, but we feel stuck or fearful of moving forward. As your therapist, I will provide a safe space for you to explore what may be holding you back. I will help guide you towards making positive changes and choices.

If you are skeptical about psychotherapy because so many therapists endlessly talk about feelings, dwell on the past, or have abstract theories that only they understand, then my sensible approach is for you. I teach you ideas to help you cope with difficult situations, challenging people, unfair burdens, acts of disrespect, disapproval, rejection, and states of deprivation. I teach you ideas and strive to get you in and out of therapy. In my view therapy should be problem-focused, efficient, sensible, and teach you how to help yourself. I do not want you to grow dependent on a psychotherapist but rather learn how to depend on you.

I try to help those who are struggling to reduce their emotional and behavioral conflicts and stressors in order to achieve their potential in life while in relation to the people, places and things they depend upon in their life. When a person is capable in becoming more fully aware or mindful of their feelings, thoughts and actions; while further developing a reflective, tolerant capacity; and continues working towards attempting achievement of their needs and wants where possible or learning acceptance, grieving, and moving on, then I think we are living as fully as possible.

I have been a therapist for over 30 years and work mainly from an insight oriented point of view. I have been influenced by humanistic, psychodynamic, interpersonal and Gestalt therapies and I have attended The Gestalt Institute for Psychotherapy. I believe it is important to be clear,non-judgmental and empathic in supporting a person's desire to find meaning and a new way of understanding themselves. Significant change takes place on an emotional level and involves reworking the way we think leading to a change in the way we feel. I have also been trained in EMDR and work with trauma

My approach to therapy is collaborative. Using a combination of psychodynamic, intersubjective and cognitive-behavioral approaches, I work with you to uncover long-established blocks and counterproductive ways of thinking about yourself and the world. The benefits this work yields are understanding and mastery over the issues which caused you to seek therapy and the ability to maximize your full potential. How do you choose the best therapist for you? Most important are his or her ability to be responsive to your particular needs, the therapist's breadth of experience, and a mutual feeling that it is a "good match."

The decision to begin therapy is a courageous one often made when feeling stuck, vulnerable, or in emotional distress. My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe and supportive space, where your thoughts and feelings can be expressed openly and freely, and a deepening awareness can lead to developing a meaningful and lasting understanding of your unique way of being in the world. In my experience change occurs in the context of relationship. Within the therapeutic relationship, new ways of being can be experienced, leading to a more creative, open way of living.

Are you living the life you want? Is your relationship a source of pain for you? Are you arguing more, trusting less, or finding yourself not looking forward to spending time together? Maybe your relationship feels stuck, like you're just replaying the same disagreement over and over again. Do you not like the person you are when you're in a relationship or wonder why you keep repeating patterns in the type of person you date? Human beings are wired for connection, yet somehow the people we are closest with also seem to cause us the most pain.

"At its best, psychotherapy alleviates suffering and makes possible a richer, more meaningful life. I work with patients by drawing on a number of different perspectives. In particular, I use a psychoanalytic approach to address repetitive patterns and historical forces that prevent people from creating the life they want to live. I integrate behavioral interventions when appropriate to confront specific problems and to help people develop a sense of competency, control, and agency."

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
