There are many ways to process experiences and feelings, not simply limited to talking. Integrating psychotherapy and creative expression can provide a refreshing, insightful, and effective experience in therapy. Some of my areas of focus include trauma, anxiety and depression, stress, loss and life transitions, as well as family and relationship difficulties, among others.

WHY THERAPY? Finding a therapist or counselor can be an anxiety-provoking pursuit. In my experience, people seek treatment for a wide variety of reasons, such as depression, anxiety/stress, relationship problems, parenting difficulties, low self-esteem, and so on. Seeking therapy is an act of maturity and strength! It says that you recognize that you are unhappy or dissatisfied with some aspect of your life and that you ultimately want to function and feel better.

We have many words for the psychic, emotional, and self-injuries we endure - bi-polar, psychoses, depression, anxiety, borderline, PTSD, abuse, addiction, grief - and working together we learn to unclot the wounds so they heal.
Whether the collapse is "out there" or "in here," it often seems the world is collapsing. Many of us seek therapy because the sense of losing our mind, our self, our loved ones, or our livelihood is terrifying, and the real threats of catastrophe are debilitating. Knowing what we want becomes increasingly difficult, and we struggle to take shape and hold on to ourselves in the presence of others. We fold up or fold in to protect ourselves and our relationships, but then aloneness, desperation, panic, and self attack set in.

There's nothing "wrong" with you. I've been practicing for a number of years and can tell you without a doubt that anxiety, depression, fear, anger and insecurity are all aspects of the human condition. Everybody has them to some degree - though of course they can reach a level of intensity where we feel the need to reach out for help.

I have two decades of experience in treating a variety of ailments, with a focus on anxiety, depression, ADHD, and relationship issues.
Welcome! I help my clients develop tools to remove obstacles that stand in the way of their happiness and prevent them from tapping into the innate wisdom that each of us possesses. I incorporate Eastern philosophy and meditation with contemporary psychology in creating an open space in which healing can unfold. My process is strongly influenced by mindfulness and cognitive behavioral approaches.

I approach psychotherapy with cultural humility and a growth mindset. As a South-Asian woman continuing to navigate the nuances of my bi-cultural identities, I appreciate the contributions of complex sociocultural issues to an individual’s sense of self, holistic well-being, and meaning in life. My educational and clinical experience thus far has fueled my passion towards working with underserved populations including BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.

I specifically specialize in working with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with Anxiety, ADHD, Autism, Depression, and Trauma.
Therapy is a powerful tool for reflection and change. Whether working with children, teens, or adults, my approach is collaborative and goal-oriented. Sometimes we become stuck in painful or unsatisfying ways of being and need a safe space to learn about ourselves, heal, and grow. Issues I commonly work with include behavioral concerns, relationships, life transitions, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and trauma. I work with clients to understand the impact of past experiences on the present, but also focus on the here-and-now in session and incorporate breathing and meditation practices to cope with everyday stress.

I work with adults to navigate life transitions and manage anxiety, stress, and depression. And as a neurodiversity-affirming therapist, I do not believe such conditions should be “cured.” Instead I treat the stresses that accompany living in an often invalidating or non-accommodating world.

Hi, I'm Debra Rice a licensed therapist with over 15 years of experience. I'd like to know more about everything that's been going on, and how you've been dealing with it. My clients say I'm a great listener, and that our work together has helped them to feel supported, and to see a path forward that they hadn't seen before. I know it can be hard to see positive things when things aren't going so well, but I'm going to help you see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, the place you're in right now is temporary, and I'm here to help you find the path forward.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
