I often view my work as supporting bodies in transition - in whatever form that comes. Many of my clients are those with medical illness or injury, caregivers, mothers, or trauma survivors who are faced with the impact that change in their physical self has on their mental and emotional well-being. Clients often wish to explore the mind-body connection, integrate non-verbal approaches, or find a new perspective on therapy. I also work with infants and children who deserve the same compassionate care, but don't benefit from verbal therapy in the same way.

Consider this: "Pain is unavoidable, but suffering is optional!" If you are hurting right now, physically and/or emotionally, you may not believe that it is possible not to suffer.
You may have considered finding a therapist for a while, wondering whether it's worth the risk. Are you struggling with physical symptoms, feelings or behaviors you don't particularly like, but can't seem to control? Have you found it difficult to make changes in your life, although you have tried many times on your own? Are you dissatisfied with how your relationships are going? Perhaps you wish you could be a more effective parent? Or maybe you already know there is "stuff" you haven't wanted to touch on your own, but it's not going away......., and you are ready to invest in healing whatever hurts? Then therapy can help.

I specialize in treating childhood trauma, chronic pain, adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs), post-traumatic stress disorder, and codependency.
With over a decade of experience in the mental health field I have worked with clients from all walks of life. While everyone is unique in their struggles, I believe that most suffering can be alleviated by addressing root causes such as early childhood traumas, nervous system dysfunction, and family of origin wounding.

The psychotherapy I do is depth-oriented, offered in a safe and peaceful setting, where we can build your sense of inner peace. We will uncover your family legacy, as well as the maladaptive patterns you are living that underlie your suffering. Within that context, we will practice awareness of the present moment and unhook you from the influences of the past. We can work to improve your relationships, clarify your life goals and help you find a sense of ease and confidence in yourself. If you are depressed and/or anxious, we will find the ways to release you from emotional pain and move toward personal fulfillment.

Focusing awareness on physical sensations (like chronic pain & tension), breathing, and emotions brings us into the present moment.
When anxiety and depression run wild, our relationships suffer and self confidence is eroded. I help Individuals restore wholeness and safety; especially after a trauma from long ago, or just yesterday. I also work with individuals longing for deeper connection and joy in their personal and work relationships. I blend body-based approaches, mindfulness and hypnotherapy to offer tangible tools for staying healthy and grounded; especially when life's running us and lacks vitality.

You're tired of being "strong." Your old ways of coping no longer work, and your "symptoms" keep recurring despite your best efforts. Maybe you have recurring or chronic depression or anxiety, or are grieving a loss. You might be struggling with your creativity, or with your identity. You may suspect that your current struggles are rooted in childhood trauma, and yet, this insight hasn't led to much change... But what if it were true that the source of your suffering is also the key to positive, lasting transformation? I believe that it is, and I am honored to provide a safe space for you to heal, and to get to know your true self.

Welcome! Looking for the right therapist is a solid beginning to your search for greater well-being. As hard as your experience has been – connecting, parenting, partnering, working – having a companion on this part of your journey will make carrying the load easier. The anxiety, sadness and a sense of being overwhelmed can feel like a barrier too high to climb; trying so hard to make it different can be discouraging and frustrating when it doesn’t work out the way you’d hoped. You know what you love, what is important to you, let’s work together to figure out how best to get you closer to what you care about most.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
