This may manifest in myriad ways ---finding, communicating, separating from, or being more intimate in relationships; depression/anxiety sucking the energy/pleasure/novelty from life... Let's be curious together and understand the causes of your suffering. Let's see if there can be a change in perspective, in some ways a psychic paradigm shift, that lifts you out of the matrix of your current reality and relieves suffering. Let's learn from this therapeutic process an ongoing path for being with and exploring life so that it may be fuller and happier.

I believe that one of the ways in which self-awareness is achieved is through the sharing of one's story. Therefore, I strive diligently to create a safe space for one to share both the beauty and the brokenness of one's story with authenticity, genuineness, and integrity. When appropriate, I infuse spirituality and religion into my therapeutic practice; thus enabling my clients to articulate their feelings of dis-ease within the context of their faith. I have found this approach to be particularly effective in working with populations marginalized because of race, gender, or sexual orientation.

In each of us there is a wise and compassionate Self. It is already there, and does not have to be created or developed. Too often, however, our access to this Self is obscured by protective and sometimes conflicting thoughts and emotions. These protections were put in place for a reason, but can become outdated and even dysfunctional as we mature. In our therapy together we will uncover what is being protected, release old patterns and emotions, and create space for this wise Self to take a larger role in your life.

Would you like to make a change for the better in your life? Life presents each of us with daily challenges, perhaps in the form of circumstances beyond our control - the loss of a loved one, sudden unemployment, failing health. Or, our difficulties arise from within - anxieties, depression, anger, addictions. My approach is empathic, client centered and solution-focused. One's ability to navigate mindfully through stressful situations is key to living a more joyful life. I believe we each have the power to live happier lives through conscious choices and practical actions. For 25 years, I have worked as a therapist and coach, assisting many people find relief from non-productive anxiety and discover their authentic voice.

Life has its ups and downs. You want to have the skills, resources, and supports to weather whatever the world throws at you and you want that for your family too. As strong and resourceful as we are, no one has the ability to manage everything, all the time. Every now and then, any one of us could use a little extra help. Maybe you have been feeling more stressed. Maybe you are going through a major life change. Maybe there have been concerns about your child’s development or behavior. Maybe you or your loved one has been diagnosed with a learning or developmental disability, or you want to know more about ADHD, Autism, or Anxiety.

Grief is a natural response to a bereavement or a loss of any kind, but the distress you understandably feel today need not be incapacitating or unnecessarily prolonged. My approach will help you come to terms with your new reality, while retaining a healthy and positive psychological relationship with the loved ones you have cherished, but who are now no longer physically present. We will work together to establish new strategies for living a fulfilling and joyful life - a life that can be continually enriched by the happy memories of times gone by. A life of gratitude, rather than regret.

The pandemic has challenged our connection to those we love, to finding and sustaining new friendships, to our sense of belonging. For some of us, depression and anxiety are affecting us as never before. How can we get our needs met during this time of uncertainty? I believe that together we can make a plan to live our best possible life, keeping hope in our hearts, connecting with our loved ones, adapting and adjusting to this new world.

I think of therapy as a way of freeing ourselves from the obstacles which prevent us from moving forward in our lives. Frequently these obstacles present themselves to us in the challenges of the outer world--in problems at work, in difficult relationships, in adapting to life changes, or in the sudden impact of a traumatic event. And sometimes what stands in the way of our freedom and happiness lies within us, as negative thought patterns, conflicting or confusing emotions, and unexpressed feelings--all of which can result in depression, anxiety, chronic illness, low self esteem--burdens we often carry alone.

My practice is devoted to providing psychotherapy for older adolescents and adults from diverse walks of life. I treat clients who suffer from anxiety, depression, unresolved trauma, loss, grief, and other sources of seemingly unmanageable distress. I also help clients navigate specific life transitions -- for example, to a new school, job, relationship, or parenthood. Finally, I welcome clients who are experiencing relatively diffuse, general discontent and searching for greater fulfillment with respect to their health, relationships, education, job career, or creative endeavors.

My goal in therapy is to hold a compassionate, non-judgmental space for clients to explore their inner lives and make day-to-day life better, one step at a time. I utilize a variety of evidenced-based approaches, including cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment therapy. I help clients connect their mind and body when it comes to healing from traumatic and difficult life experiences. My clients report that connecting the mind and body promote a greater sense of goundedness and authenticity.

My ideal client is someone who is self-motivated to work through their hindrances with kindness, compassion and commitment. I work alongside clients to develop their awareness of behavioral patterns and use mindfulness-based CBT techniques to redirect repetitive and compulsive thought patterns. I particularly enjoy working with clients heal and recover from narcissistic abuse, which is rampant in our day and age.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
