Currently accepting new clients! My clients often begin therapy having identified some aspect of their life that is no longer serving them and wanting to make a change. As a licensed graduate professional counselor, I work with adolescents (starting at age 15) and adults who struggle with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, gender and sexual identity development, self harm, and attachment trauma. I aim to create a safe and secure therapeutic space where clients can not only imagine their ideal life, but start to turn that image into reality.

Today you or your family are one step closer to a new you, where you feel empowered and on a positive path to growth and well-being. I see therapy (individual, couples and family) as a collaborative effort to figure out what obstacles are getting in the way of you and your family's happiness. We explore past and current behaviors, thoughts, relationships, and make connections between past and current experiences to help create change. We can work together to create a new experience that not only gets you through the storm to the calm, but can help you or your family thrive.

Welcome to my practice. I look forward to getting to know you and hearing about what's troubling you, while you get a sense of what it will be like working with me. After an assessment of 1 or 2 sessions, we will arrive at an initial understanding of your situation and the issues and/or symptoms you'd like to address. We'll look at treatment options and agree on a plan, which may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), insight-oriented psychotherapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, or couples therapy, as indicated by your particular problem.

Kristin’s expertise is in working with adults and adolescents experiencing anxiety, adjustment difficulties, obsessive and intrusive thoughts, depression, self-harming behaviors, disordered eating, and trauma and loss.
“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination.” Do you find yourself wondering what you can do to feel better—less anxious, more confident, even happy? It seems like you’ve tried everything but nothing seems to work, at least not for very long. You may be able to support others yet you fall short on supporting yourself. You no longer feel like yourself and worry that it could get worse. Imagine what it would feel like not to constantly worry and to be confident in your ability to handle challenging situations. Therapy is a step in practicing self-awareness and self-care.

Are you struggling to have a healthy relationship with yourself or with others? Does it often feel like happiness comes more easily to other people than it does to you? Or that somewhere along the way, you stumbled or lost your way, and are fighting to find it again? Let me assure you that you deserve and are capable of joy and growth. My work has shown me that happiness does not mean feeling "good" all the time, but rather being strong enough to tolerate all that life throws at us. Maybe you have been thrown an awful lot.

My ideal client(s) are those struggling with both trauma and relationships. Trauma can deeply impact how we relate to others, whether it be experiences from childhood that have persisted in creating struggles over the life course, or impactful instances in adulthood a person still struggles with. I am especially interested in people who struggle with attachment issues in relationships. The ideal client is one who is receptive to change, can take ownership of their life, and has the capacity for self-reflection. They would be interested in creating a more fulfilling life for them, based on the meanings the create in their own lives.

Finding a therapist you connect with can feel so overwhelming you avoid it. But that is probably why you're here, because there have been things you've been avoiding and you're ready to get some help. Being foster and adoptive parents is way harder than most people understand, especially those who haven't experienced the invasive and arduous process. As a teen or young adult, you might be feeling lost or angry. You might be having a harder time than others figuring out who are you are and where you fit in the world. My style fuses warmth, humor, and directness.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
