Together you and I will reflect honestly on the challenges you face and work collaboratively to navigate a meaningful path forward. I work with a range of individuals, some of whom are brand new to therapy and others very familiar with the process. Clients who are self-reflective and curious about themselves often are a good fit. Usually my clients are struggling with interpersonal relationships and/or disillusionment with their professional circumstances. Many of my clients are struggling with physical manifestations of stress as well. While I enjoy work with all gender identities, I am well-versed in men's mental health issues.

I have provided individual, group, couples and family therapy in both school settings as well as private practice settings since the onset of my career. I utilize behavioral management tools, cognitive behavioral therapy, and creative therapies to encourage and teach children as well as adults, how to increase their sense of self and learn how to celebrate their strengths and weaknesses. I feel strongly that children respond best when they are free to explore their feelings creatively as opposed to solely participating in talk therapy. I help clients feel accountable and more importantly, recognize they have the ability to grow.

Do you have so much on your mind all at once that it is difficult to understand it all and communicate your thoughts and feelings? Do you feel overwhelmed with life changes and need someone to process them with? Do you just need a non-judgmental space to explore your inner thoughts and emotions?

I believe that most people struggle at some points in their life. Many people find a way through that struggle, but it can take a while, and some people get stuck in the struggle. I can help you get to the root of what’s holding you back. One of my strengths is helping people dig through the clutter to find the real reasons they are stuck. Therapy is a place to process emotions and examine ways of thinking that hold us back from living a fuller and more fulfilling life. My priorities are to meet you where you are, figure out what’s going on together, and develop effective plans for change, to conquer challenges and nurture growth.

I think of therapy as a way of freeing ourselves from the obstacles which prevent us from moving forward in our lives. Frequently these obstacles present themselves to us in the challenges of the outer world--in problems at work, in difficult relationships, in adapting to life changes, or in the sudden impact of a traumatic event. And sometimes what stands in the way of our freedom and happiness lies within us, as negative thought patterns, conflicting or confusing emotions, and unexpressed feelings--all of which can result in depression, anxiety, chronic illness, low self esteem--burdens we often carry alone.

I work collaboratively with clients to design a treatment plan that can include a number of clinical modalities, including EFT, mindfulness, CBT and EMDR.
I offer a safe space for individuals and couples to examine their lives, looking for places to develop and heal. I help clients to understand their personal histories, the fearful or anxious narratives they may be stuck in and to build positive change in their lives. My graduate studies at Harvard focused on trauma and resilience. I was drawn to my work by the question of how to help people tap into their internal resilience to heal from difficult experiences and to live their best life?

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
