Deciding to come to counseling is a difficult one. My passion is to “walk along side” the person who ready to be challenged and work through being "stuck" from distressing experiences. My specialty is working with people who have traumatic pasts causing intrusive thinking/rumination; nightmares and flashbacks; and avoidance from others and situations. I am passionate about working with individuals and families to overcome underlying relational problems and to feel safe expressing their wishes and desires. I counsel with people who are dependent on drugs and alcohol working through what he or she is escaping from.

Hello, I am Kristia. I am happy that you stopped by and hopefully this will be the beginning (or continuation) of your journey to heal, grow, and thrive. I have been happily serving as a therapist for over 25 years and I would not change a thing; this is what I called to do and never considered a "plan B." Being a therapist was my dream and focus since I was 10 years old. You will find me to be nonjudgmental, personable, easy to talk to, and appropriately humorous as we work toward your goals. By the way, I offer Psychotherapy, and Christian Counseling.

Since 1997, I've been a Licensed Psychotherapist, progressing from community mental health to working in both inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities, particularly focusing on impaired physicians. Eventually, I ventured into private practice. My journey involved providing career aptitude assessments and mediation services for college students and facilitating C-level team-building exercises. This experience revealed to me the effectiveness of peak performance training for individuals at any stage of life.

My experience spans disorders, populations and modes of treatment from working with chronically mentally ill to individuals dealing with anxiety, substance abuse, depression, mood disorders, to people wanting to improve communication, coping with loss and trauma, helping couples dealing with relationship issues, developing family and interpersonal relationships to career transitions.
I am passionate about my work and believe in the healing benefits of psychotherapy. I view therapy as a process through which we explore the issues that confront you, place them in a context and develop strategies for change. Engaging in this process not only do we learn new ways of coping or getting "unstuck" but we also develop a more genuine relationship with ourselves, others and the world in general. I am authentic and direct but a considerate therapist who will work with you and assist in empowering you to move forward in meeting your goals with care, compassion and a sense of humor.

Have issues at home or school left your child depressed, angry or withdrawn? Many times, behavior and mood changes may be your child’s way of communicating that they need help processing the things going on in their lives. When adults are stressed and overwhelmed, other aspects of our lives suffer (e.g. job performance, relationship, etc). Children & teens experience emotional stress in similar ways. Failing grades, self-harm or behavioral issues at home and school are signs that something deeper may be happening. As a parent you may feel helpless. You've tried all you know but nothing works. You just want it to get better!

Another one of my specialties is EMDR, a physiologically based therapy for the treatment of conditions such as PTSD, various anxiety disorders, complicated grief, adult or childhood trauma, combat trauma, and physical or emotional abuse.
In my work with couples, adults, and teens, my hope is that clients will leave therapy confident in their strengths, equipped to make wise choices, and empowered to maintain healthier lives and relationships. While the content of sessions depends on client needs/preferences, I typically work to alleviate negative symptoms within the context of current circumstances, help identify the root of challenges, and modify unhealthy cognitive and emotional processes. I use interventions that help clients break through an impasse and equip them with practical solutions for future problem-solving. I offer targeted short-term counseling or in-depth therapy that identifies and replaces negative patterns.

I specialize in complex trauma and work from a relational perspective.
I help teens and young adults express themselves so they can feel seen and understood. My clients struggle like you do. Despite being smart, artsy, and a skilled techy, life is hard. When my clients first come in, they often start off a bit on the quiet side. Maybe it's because they're the introverted type or maybe it's just that we're in the "getting to know each other" phase. Heck, it could even be that putting their struggles into words is like trying to watch YouTube when your parents turn off the WiFi. They feel trapped on a rollercoaster with all the ups and downs so fast they can't get their balance.

I use gold standard trauma treatments, including cognitive and exposure based therapies, EMDR & mindfulness.
Trauma and pain from past and present experiences can stop your life in its tracks, leaving you stuck in the same patterns, of thinking, feeling and behaving that eventually lead to building a life that is less than what you've hoped for. But with a little help, you can pause, learn tools, gain insights and begin to change your life's direction. You are not responsible for everything that has happened to you AND you are responsible for making meaning from the life you are living. How you do this depends on whom you believe yourself to be. Our work will help you to heal YOU. In person and virtual visits in GA, CT.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
