For over 21 years I have provided psychotherapy in Metro Atlanta, working with individuals and couples on issues related to depression and anxiety, relationships, sexual identity, life transitions, and personal growth and development. I would welcome the opportunity to work with you, and I invite you to visit my web site to learn more about me and my practice: www.PsychotherapyInAtlanta.com.

I have a deep respect for the power of relationship.
No two people are the same- not even two therapy sessions, with the same person, are the same. So, describing what therapy is like with me on a web site is a little like describing what "all rivers" look like. What I can say is I will prioritize that you are heard, valued, and encouraged, and I will collaborate with you on what works best for you-whether that's finding strategies to cope with something current or finally addressing a concern that has developed over time. I will also met you with integrity and offer you the best of who I am and what the field of psychology has to offer.

Or if you are dealing with low sex drive, it can feel troubling when interacting with a partner with a higher sex drive.
If you're someone that is having trouble with perfectionism, it can feel like there is this never-ending pressure on you to hit un-achievable standards. You feel a need to be in control of something in your life before everything unravels. You may feel stressed, frustrated, and that no one understands the pressure you have on yourself. You wish you could wave a magic wand and everything could go according to your plan. You want to be able to plan your future and feel assured that everything will go smoothly instead of anxious and worried about checking the next thing off your list. You want to be able to focus on the present moment.

I work with clients in my private practice, who I believe have the capacity to resolve their own problems, however, there are times in our lives when we need assistance. I believe that as people become more accepting of themselves, they are more capable of finding happiness and contentment in their lives. I provide a safe environment for clients to explore their life path and integrate wellness with the necessary aspects of change.

I specialize in individual and couples therapy with older adolescents and adults.
As your therapist, I would provide a collaborative partnership that allows you to move towards your goals; both support and challenge would be provided to allow opportunities for healing and personal growth. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is crucial for psychotherapy to be effective. A strong relationship can allow for self-reflection and a greater understanding of ourselves and our patterns in relationships, helps us manage challenges, nurture feelings of empowerment, allow us to take the risks we want, and afford us opportunities for resiliency and greater life satisfaction. Please call for a free phone consultation.

I have worked on the field of psychology for more than 20 years, first as an undergraduate student in University of Havana, Cuba, then Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain and finally in Atlanta, Georgia, where I completed my internship and postdoctoral studies at Emory University. As part of my training and the last 11 years in private practice, I have had the privilege of working with very diverse and culturally different populations. This has given me the opportunity to see human experience from a much broader and deeper perspective. I have served the Hispanic community since 2008. I am licensed in Georgia and Florida.

I specialize in men's issues, relationship issues, and couples therapy. "Men's issues" refers to numerous factors that contribute to men's dissatisfaction with life (e.g., work stress and few friends), as well as the consequences (e.g., behaviors that can become excessive and problematic -- substance use, workouts, sex, etc.). I offer a safe environment where you can address difficult issues. I am casual and down-to-earth. My approach is pragmatic and client-centered. Did you have a difficult childhood and are now afraid of repeating the same dysfunctional patterns in your own relationship? Are you afraid of intimacy and scared that your partner will reject and/or abandon you? Do you fear they won't "get" you? Maybe you have a hard time understanding yourself and knowing why you treat your partner the way you do. If you did not have the best childhood growing up, then chances are, you do not have a good model of what a healthy, life-long relationship or marriage looks like. Your parents did their best, but they struggled with their own issues and did not know have to have a healthy partnership.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
