Hello, I’m Davia, and I’m of Jamaican descent. Seeking mental health counseling is normalizing because mental health professionals continue to speak about, advocate for, and accept its presence in our clients’ lives. You are not alone if you seek mental health counseling. In fact, you are courageous and aware that getting help is a sign of indomitable strength. Are you lacking boundaries or wondering why life seems topsy-turvy? Do you function in survival mode but struggle with exhaustion or burnout?

Are you an individual struggling with living life on life’s terms? Are you struggling with depression or anxiety? And have you been trying to avoid experiencing the discomfort that often accompanies both? Have you, your child or a loved recently received an autism diagnosis? Are you struggling with those unsolvable marital issues that seem small, but which often feel like they are overshadowing the relationship due to ongoing conflicts, lack of communication and lack of de-escalation skills? Have your family dynamics been affected due to substance abuse or a recently diagnosed ASD disorder? If any of these applies. I'm here to help

Have you suffered from a Narcissistic abusive relationship? Do you tend to be a caregiver at the expense of your own needs? Toxic relationships are not limited to romantic partners, they can be with our parents, siblings, friends, and even work relations. These kinds of experiences leave a lasting, negative impact on one’s mental and emotional well-being resulting in a life-long trauma wound. This can leave us in a state of perpetual anxiety, depression, isolation, confusion and codependency. Sometimes we may even develop an addiction as a means to cope or develop a fear of abandonment.

The stress is overwhelming. Anxiety is at an all time high. Life is unpredictable and you don’t know how to cope with work, the kids, their school, and being quarantined. The desire to run from your house and not return has crossed your mind, but you dig deep and tell yourself today will be better. But it isn’t. The anxiety feels like it is going to explode from your chest. It starts settling into depression and you feel like you are walking in a fog. Unable to make decisions, not able to complete tasks, feeling frustrated and annoyed all the time. You just want life to be back to normal and it feels like there is no end in sight.

On the outside you have it all together but on the inside you are falling apart, you continue to tell yourself you are just tired or stressed. Have you been struggling to do basic things and are uninterested in the things you once enjoyed. You are experiencing constant mood swings that you cannot explain or control, feeling hopeless and constant racing thoughts that make it difficult to get through each day. Do you find yourself spending money or overindulging in food for instant gratification?

Hi there, Congrats on making it to this step! Looking into therapy can be overwhelming, whether it is your first time or your familiar with it. You may think, is this really for me? I am here to tell you that you are not alone in this journey. I believe therapy is for anyone and everyone. Whether you are going through a crisis or not, having someone unbiased to talk to can help. You have to find the right fit and I hope I can be that, but if not I would love to provide you with other resources. I believe in making therapy an accepting and safe place that provides compassion, honesty, and focusing on Progress rather than Perfection.

Night after night, you and your partner lie in bed together feeling miles apart. The quiet between you feels heavy. Days end without fixing things, making you feel more distant. It's hard to talk like you used to, with hurt and misunderstandings getting in the way. You miss how things were when joy and closeness filled your days. Now, all you have are these endless arguments and cold silences. You're both longing to find that closeness again, to understand and heal together. Despite the tough times, you still hold onto hope for a future where you can reconnect and grow stronger together.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
