For many years, I have specialized in the treatment of complex Anxiety, OCD and Related Disorders, Trauma/PTSD and Eating Disorders.
Do you worry uncontrollably? Do you have difficulties feeling uncertain and have a low tolerance for distress or anxiety? Do you often do things to get rid of your thoughts and it just gets worse? Is it difficult to manage how you respond to your emotions? Do you have thoughts that you “aren’t good enough” or feel guilty about things you think you “should”/“shouldn’t” have done? Have you gone through a difficult life situation which is difficult to overcome? Do you experience difficulties in social relationships? Do you have trouble accepting the way you look? Do you struggle with tics, skin picking, hair pulling or nail biting?

Do you know that something needs to change but you can't seem to figure out what it is? Or maybe you know what needs to change, but you can't seem to figure out how? You feel stuck. You may even feel defeated. You know that something is wrong, and although you have tried on your own, you aren't feeling better yet. The voice inside of you that used to scream, "YOU DESERVE MORE" and "LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO FEEL BETTER THAN THIS" keeps getting quieter and quieter. Luckily, there is help. It does get better. Together, we can identify the patterns and behaviors that are keeping you stuck, and get your life back on the path you deserve.

My goal for private practice is to support others to find peace and wholeness within their lives and relationships. Throughout my time working as a therapist, I have assisted clients with transforming their lives from desperation and overwhelming anxiety to a life filled with hope and serenity. I have watched families who were broken by addiction who grew to live a chaotic-free life with the tools to navigate their communication and let go of codependent behaviors. I have had the pleasure of coaching couples on the verge of divorce to grow together and build a stronger relationship.

Dr. Tom was born in Israel and raised in florida in a family with unique values, which led her to a genuine appreciation for culture and individuality. Growing up with a Hebrew name that was frequently misunderstood in a primarily English-speaking society fostered cultural awareness from a very young age. However, this adversity combined with pride for her identity allowed her to recognize and embrace others’ diversity. The dichotomy of growing up in a suburban American society with certain outlooks, and then coming home to differing cultural perspectives helped her develop an expanded range of vision and acceptance of others.

Tell me if any of this sounds like you - You're relentlessly hard on yourself. You might feel uncomfy in your own skin and struggle with body image or disordered eating. Maybe you're burnt out on dating/relationships and wonder if you'll ever find what you're looking for. On the surface, it might seem like you have it all together, but in reality, you overthink, have a hard time speaking your mind, and run through "what ifs" endlessly. You're goal-oriented and hard-working, but regardless of your accomplishments, nothing feels like it translates to truly feeling good enough. If this resonates with you, you're in the right place!

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
