I enjoy working with trauma, grief, loss, anxiety & depression.
If you are looking for a results-oriented therapist, you've come to the right place! I focus on what you are already doing well and build on it. I also help you look at your difficulties from different perspectives. A heads up, I’m not the typical talk therapist. I’m not interested in you sitting on the couch with me for years. I want you to jump all in, do the hard work, heal well and get on with living your life.

We all have innate wisdom about what is best for us but may struggle to believe this about ourselves. Your mind may be loud and chaotic, you might struggle with anger and life changes. Trauma may have damaged your view of yourself. I strive to create a safe environment in which you can be curious about the relationship between your inner and outer worlds, and how they relate. Through curiosity, I hope to show you that there are no “bad parts" of you, just parts that may no longer serve you. I'll guide you to connect mind/body to navigate old and new thoughts, experiences, and emotions.

Transitions of all kinds can be SCARY and HARD, and may leave one stuck in a place of powerlessness and frustration. Living and getting through each day may be PAINFUL - whether because of isolation or too much togetherness and conflict (or both!). Struggles make hearing others and feeling heard more difficult. Managing our feelings and relationships is easier "wished" for than accomplished. I can help you choose the right words, figure out where you are in life and relationships, and find your way through difficult times.

I specialize in treating addiction, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues for adults and adolescents.
Are you feeling stuck in your life? Do you feel mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically exhausted, confused, or disconnected? It's easy to get stuck in our patterns, ways of functioning in life become habitual, and often these patterns become damaging to us- personally and relationally. What's more, it's not always easy to see exactly where we are getting stuck and how to move beyond that place. I offer support, encouragement, and trust as you begin a new journey toward healing and growth.

My approach to therapy stems from an attachment theory and psychodynamic background both with individuals and couples. In our work together we will unpack problems, address stresses and anxiety, and create resiliency you can take into your future. I tailor talk therapy strategies to each client to take into consideration their unique life experiences and therapeutic goals. I take this same approach with the couples I see, using Imago Relationship Therapy. In couples therapy you can expect to increase your understanding of your partner and learn new ways to communicate with each other that feel connecting.

Do you struggle with feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and thoughts about not being good enough? Do you find yourself worrying about your intimate and platonic relationships? Do you often get accused of "overreacting" to a situation? You’re not alone! My approach is warm, interactive, and non-judgmental. Although flexible, I tend to use a combination of EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), Person-Centered Therapy, and mindfulness-based techniques.

Feeling stuck and having trouble engaging with what really matters to you? Your brain has done an excellent job keeping you safe, but some strategies developed as a reaction to stressors may no longer meet your needs. Issues like family of origin discord, medical illnesses, neurodiversity, and stressful work environments can all add up to impact our relationship with ourselves and others. I especially love working with high achievers who have issues with perfectionism, burnout, dissociation, attachment, and procrastination.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
