Making space to take care of ourselves is so important to good mental health. People often seek therapy when life has come to feel unmanageable. Coping mechanisms that served you well in the past may no longer work, yet are ingrained, often unconscious, and difficult to change. Whether your goal is to explore long standing issues, or to seek support with present themes, my goal as a therapist is to create a non-judgmental and helpful environment where you can make sense of your experiences and feelings while making progress towards a healthier way of being.

I specialize in treating children, adolescents and adults with anxiety, stress, anger, depression, family conflict, relationship issues, personal growth and spiritual issues, self-esteem, career concerns, and issues of grief and loss.
I believe that when people seek counseling it is because they want to make a change in their lives, improve a life situation, make a decision, solve a problem or have greater understanding and insight to their lives. Counseling is a trusting partnership between client and counselor. A process of looking at and integrating thoughts, feelings and actions in a safe environment. It is not about telling you how or when to change, but rather finding what works best for you. Effective counseling requires a commitment of time, energy, and active participation by both client and counselor.

You’ve made a courageous step in seeking therapy. Therapy can help us heal and grow, through deep listening and presence. Early life shapes how we create our sense of self, learn boundaries, and tend to feelings. We can decide now how we want to show up for ourselves and others, uncovering skills and beliefs that no longer serve us.

An important aspect of any therapeutic relationship is the rapport and ease you have in discussing your issues and concerns with your therapist. I believe the right fit between the client and therapist is in large part a function of the flexibility in approach and ways of intervening with you as an individual client. I see the therapeutic relationship as being a collaborative partnership that is outcome focused in addressing your issues and concerns. The emphasis is on doing what is most effective in moving you toward your desired outcomes in the least amount of time possible.

Navigating anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and gender/sexuality concerns might be isolating and associated with feelings of shame and grief.
Perhaps you are at a crossroads in life and are struggling to find your path. You are a perfectionist with high achieving tendencies however, feel unable to calm your anxiety, depression, or negative self-talk. Your successes are undermined by a voice in your head stating, “I don’t think I’m good enough or I don’t have anything left to give.” You have successfully navigated many of life’s difficult decisions yet, your self-esteem and confidence are holding you back.

Welcome! I believe that one of the essential ingredients of change and transformative psychotherapy is the relationship between the individual and the therapist. Feeling understood and comfortable only helps reduce one's symptoms, encouraging self-acceptance, but also leads toward deeper work which promotes lasting change and a deeper experience of one's whole self.

I specialize in trauma healing, treating anxiety and depression, difficult relationships, perfectionism, ministry and missionary burn-out, gender and sexuality trauma, emotion dysregulation, adult ADHD, and adult attachment trauma.
I prioritize healthy relationships- with others, with ourselves, and with the world around us. I see the need for deeper emotional and physiological understanding to identify where we can become stuck with ourselves and in our relationships. I seek to create a space for introspection and self-compassion in the therapist-client relationship so that you can explore your authentic narrative, your inherent worth, and areas where you may need healing.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
