I am most qualified to treat people who are having problems in living fulfilling lives because of troubling symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression) or general dissatisfaction with themselves and relationships. I believe my treatment approach contributes to personal growth at any age. My rigorous training, 10 years post-Ph.D. has qualified me as a Training/Supervising Analyst who treats other therapists, and supervises other therapists--psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers in their work with adults, children and adolescents. As a Certified Sex Therapist, I treat sexual and marital dysfunctions. As a child psychoanalyst, I treat children and work with parents in parent guidance.

If you are struggling in an important relationship, whether with your partner, child, parent, sibling, or friend, or feel deeply lonely, anxious, sad, or self-doubting, therapy can be an important step towards growth and healing. I think of therapy as an opportunity not only to seek support, but also to build a collaborative working relationship within which a deeper understanding of your hopes and fears enables you to make significant change.

"I saw the angel in the marble and chisled until I set him free." (Michelangelo). I see psychotherapy as being like this-most people have it within them to know what they need or want, but something has kept them from feeling free to live life to the fullest. Most people come to see me when they are feeling that important parts of their lives (love, work or play) feel disappointing or "stuck." The "chisling" in therapy is you and I together discovering what is holding you back and identifying so many more choices than it may feel that you have now.

Generally, each person and I begin by exploring the issues that has brought them to seek out my services. This exploration entails a joint effort that unfolds over time. A relationship is formed that helps us both to see more clearly how the individual is operating in their everyday life. It is through such an exploration that the individual begins to understand themselves, and, especially, their more intimate relating. I also believe that the person leads the treatment such that we will only go as far as each person desires. I can offer ideas, but, in the end, it is the individual who leads us.

People want to be heard. That’s why I listen for your thoughts, ideas, but especially your feelings. Because they are where we all live. They are the heart of our lives and when that feels bad, everything feels bad. Sometimes it’s like you have been waiting all your life to tell your story. You don’t have to wait anymore. Recent research has shown that medication alone and therapies that focus only on behavior and not self-understanding and self-awareness cannot accomplish this. I can help you develop self-understanding so you can start making choices which enrich and uncomplicate your life. Why wait until it feels worse?

My work as a therapist is guided by the values of authenticity and respect. I offer a safe and supportive environment for self-examination and growth, and work in partnership with you to determine your own unique needs for healing. I have experience supporting clients through life and career transitions, explorations of meaning and purpose, anxiety, depression, decision-making, concerns surrounding chronic illness and/or disability, and issues related to creative work and identity. When appropriate, I incorporate mindfulness and acceptance practices, and work from a trauma-informed lens that includes body-awareness.

Gaining control over body weight brings on new possibilities, yet can also bring on a new set of unexpected realities. People who knew us as overweight may distance themselves or show signs of disapproval. We may not believe in our ability to have a fulfilling career, be a good parent or romantic partner. We progress toward our goals and feel good at first, yet we may return to former habits, and run up against a set of obsolete internal beliefs about what we capable of doing. This limits us. We want to live fully, yet these thoughts keep us from achieving our goals.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
