My counseling style is respectful and compassionate. I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety, grief, sexual abuse, self-esteem and emotional eating/weight loss.

In my private practice, I specialize in working with the transgender and non-binary community: adults, teens and children who identify as transgender and parents with a child or adult child who identifies as transgender or non-binary. While trans identified individuals face many of the same challenges as cisgender people, such as depression, anxiety and relationship concerns, I am also aware of the challenges unique to transgender and non-binary people and their loved ones including discrimination, stigma, rejection, and oppression.

No matter how hard you try to move forward, you feel like your taking one step back. You’re a high performer with perfectionism tendencies and always put on a smile, which helps you forget your pain. You may feel you will never be fully happy and never be able to fully enjoy life how others do, because of your many losses, attributing to your decreased self esteem. You may keep friends and family at a distance, to protect yourself from yet another inevitable loss. You may have stopped exercising and taking care of yourself the way you used to, since it takes too much work and you're just surviving at the end of another long day.

I am a counselor in Michigan with 15+ years of experience providing counseling to families and individuals across the lifespan in-person, on the phone, and online formats. I have worked with clients on a wide range of issues from life adjustments to severe and persistent mental illness. I am a special needs parent, with a young adult son with Autism; and another young adult daughter that is LGBTQ+. Clients often find me to be very relatable because of the combination of my professional and personal experiences.

The most challenging step in seeking help is making the first appointment, and I understand it might be anxiety provoking. I provide individual and couples' therapy utilizing cognitive-behavioral theories within a solution-focused framework. This allows for some relief to happen quickly for depression, anxiety, panic, grief, PTSD, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, care giver stress, eating disorders, substance abuse, trichotillomania, infertility, LGBTQQIAAP issues, and neuropsychological (head injury, dementias). As a Certified Sex Therapist, I treat sexual and marital dysfunctions. As a child psychoanalyst, I treat children and work with parents in parent guidance.

I work with clients to target difficulties associated with Autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, OCD, insomnia, weight management, tic disorder, binge eating disorder, trauma, and PTSD. I also conduct ADHD & Autism assessments and pre-surgical evaluations. I implement evidence based interventions such as CBT, CPT for PTSD and trauma, Mindfulness, Habit Reversal Training, Somatic Psychotherapy, ERP, DBT Skills, and ACT.

Dr. Matthew Gonzalez is a fully licensed clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. He has over 30 years of experience spanning all age groups, populations, settings, and the full spectrum of mental, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive concerns. He earned his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and his Doctorate (Psy.D.) from Rutgers University. For the past 13 years, Dr. Gonzalez has worked with civilian, military, government, and intelligence community populations. Prior to that, he ran a busy private practice in both clinical and neuropsychology in Michigan.
