I focus on intimacy and sexual health concerns with individuals as well as couples, with an interest in non-traditional relationships and the LGBTQ+ community.
Intimacy is often a difficult topic to talk about, but one that affects many individuals and relationships. My role is to help you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Together we will collaborate to create realistic, attainable goals and a therapy plan that is the best fit for you. Being a systemically trained therapist means that I look not only at who is sitting in front of me, but all of the things affecting you, and how those impact your experiences and interactions. I am also a Prepare and Enrich Certified Facilitator as well as have an Opioid Training Certificate. Evening appointments available.

I use an interpersonal, mind-body (sensorimotor) and multicultural-feminist approach, while integrating cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and mindfulness. I believe the relationship with clients is the foundation of every effective therapy relationship. It provides space for feedback that helps us as human beings grow and create change. Together, we will collaboratively develop individualized, meaningful, and effective coping strategies to work through issues.

My clients are adult individuals, couples, and partners who want deeper relationships. They're experiencing life transitions, grief, or they've reached a point in their lives where old strategies aren't working anymore and they want to create new patterns in their lives. They want to release old hurts, feel more ease and freedom in their spirits and bodies, and understand themselves and their partners better.

I believe that everyone has the capacity to grow and change. I work with families and couples who may be questioning their connection to one another, and with individuals who feel stuck, unmotivated, or afraid. As a family therapist, I encourage people to explore how the different systems they are a part of impact the quality of their lives. How does their family function? Their place of work? Their culture? Together we explore how making changes in ourselves impacts our relationships to these different systems. We change our world by changing our relationship to it.

I have the training and experience to help you in any number of areas including: relationship stress, life transitions, addictions and recovery, compulsive attachments, grief/loss, shame-based trauma, emerging adult stressors, mood disorders, boundary setting, codependency, LGBTQ- related issues, and self-worth.
Whether you are considering making changes for the first time or looking to maintain long-term growth, my goal is to walk alongside you on that path for continued self-discovery. The goal of therapy is to promote biopsychosocial-spiritual wellness built on your values and boundaries. Therapy works best when it is collaborative so my intention is to provide the space for you to express yourself freely and get to know yourself on a deeper level as we work towards a collective goal. I like to draw from a background of CBT skills, shame-resilience, and positive psychology to empower the people I work with.

I work with adults, couples, and youth.
I have provided psychotherapy for over 35 years. I listen to your concerns and your strengths to find the best ways to help you make the changes needed. You may have already made some changes and these are vital to build upon. No concern is too small, and we will often see a snowball of positive changes occur.

Because I think healing occurs in relationship, I am “real” when talking with clients.
I have provided clinical services in a number of settings including college/university counseling centers, community mental health clinics, and in private practice. My own research and scholarly interests focus on LGBTQ issues, clinical supervision, supporting underrepresented college students, and current issues in training mental health clinicians. I am a generalist by training and work with clients with a variety of presenting concerns. I enjoy developing relationships with my clients in longer term therapy but often work within briefer treatments as well. I am flexible in my approach to help my clients achieve their goals.

In working with individuals, couples and families, my clinical approach is to partner and develop a plan that will best address unique concerns and goals.
Change can be hard. It can be scary, overwhelming, and can produce fears. It is different than what we know, different than what things are like today. Change happens no matter what; it is the one constant that we all experience.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
