I have extensive experience with children, adolescents, couples, and families with ADHD, ANGER, ANXIETY, AUTISTIM SPECTRUM, BEHAVIOR, LEARNING, MOOD DISORDERS, CAREER CHALLENGES, DEPRESSION, OCD, EATING DISORDERS, and FEARS/PHOBIAS.
Together, we will focus on solutions and help you learn to cope with life's challenges; so you can enjoy it to the fullest. I have over 25 years of experience guiding clients to achieve optimal well being and performance. Taking a team approach with my clients and strongly believing in the value of the therapeutic relationship, I empower you to make decisions in the treatment process. As opposed to some approaches of therapy which may take several years, I believe in the efficacy of a briefer counseling model which includes solution focused and cognitive behavioral therapies. Visit www.drpetemarcelo.org for more information.

My current philosophy is that if PTSD is defined as past trauma experienced in the present via different symptoms, then every clinical presentation is one of trauma. Trauma focused therapists, such as myself, look at every client as unique and that they do not (and never have) fit into the boxes that other therapists have wanted them to fit into. Trauma therapists look at your past to better understand where your symptoms come from and how to resolve them. You will learn what you avoid and how you avoid it. Our hope is that you will work with us so that you can develop a more courageous attitude and face your unfinished business.

Empathy, acceptance, and genuineness are three qualities that I believe are the foundation for building a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship. My areas of specialty are in the treatment of Couples, Women's Health Issues (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, postpartum, pregnancy loss and infertility), Eating Disorders, Depression, Relationships, Pre-Marital counseling, and Emotional Regulation. In working with complex trauma, the emotional processing, exploration of self-related difficulties (e.g., fear and shame), and acceptance or resolution of past interpersonal issues are an important part of therapy. With complex trauma, I utilize an emotion-focused therapy approach, bringing emotion to the clinical forefront of therapy.

Are you feeling that your marriage could use a makeover? Concerned about the lack of intimacy in the relationship? Couples will be able to learn how to establish a solid friendship by creating love maps, increasing the fondness and admiration and creating more emotional connection. Another key will be how to deal with conflict, so issues can be dealt with instead of letting them get buried Many different tools will be used to get the same old argument into a different experience and hopefully a different ending. I am a certified Gottman therapist, having trained in Seattle with John and Julie Gottman. (Gottman.com) .

In a clinical setting I have provided skills to aid anything from anxiety to psychosis.
Reaching out for help in our most vulnerable moments can be overwhelming and scary. Sometimes our self talk convinces us that we should figure it out on our own, or that our problems aren’t as bad as they could be - and we find ourselves hesitant to make that next step. I will meet your bravery and vulnerability with compassion, curiosity, feeling, and a bit of humor. I want to center what matters to you, develop skills and abilities, and help you rediscover a fullness in being alive and in your body. My areas of experience include working with individuals of the LBGTQ+, and navigating barriers to receiving gender affirming care.

As a therapist, I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, addiction, and anger-related issues in adults and teens.
People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Their reasons may range from mild relationship difficulties to more severe problems that affect their ability to work, love, and enjoy life. Although I use empirically-supported techniques, I do not believe in “cookie-cutter” approaches. In collaboration with my clients, I work to tailor interventions that are consistent with my clients’ goals and values. There is no "one size fits all" approach, but I draw most heavily on mindfulness-enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy. I teach people to see the connections between situations, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.

I have helped people with many common challenges such as trauma, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, depression, communication issues, and more.
In life, when we deal with difficult relationships or toxic situations, it causes negative symptoms and stress in ourselves. Carrying this burden is stressful and unnecessary. Often, these symptoms can become permanent habits that are difficult to change. My role is to help you unload stress and replace this with helpful and healing tools, permanently. My approach involves helping you understand ways of maintaining life balance and living a fulfilling life.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
