Therapy transformed my life when I was referred to a counselor years ago as a teen. Since then, I have wanted to provide this type of support and to serve as a guide for others through difficult times in life. I aspire to help my clients tap into their own inner strengths, so they can ultimately live more freely, fully and authentically. I take a client-centered approach, and help my clients identify their own goals for themselves.

Eve Brownstone, LCPC, Expressive Arts Therapist and Certified Psychodramatist I have been providing compassionate care for the creative soul for 32 years. I enjoy supporting and empowering my clients to look within to gain more self-awareness, self-love, and self-acceptance. Art therapy, dance/movement therapy, guided imagery, meditation, journaling, and role-play are some of the tools used for this journey. The arts are excellent outlets to cope with stress and therapeutic tools that get below the surface to the heart of the matter. Not everyone’s first language is verbal and the arts can help us speak. Speak our own truth.

The world can feel very uncertain, discordant, unjust, and sometimes unbearable; in my approach I aim to look with you both internally and externally to find moments of reflection, validation, empowerment, clarity, and care. I use a warm, relational approach to my work with clients. Most importantly I strive to uphold anti-racist, liberatory, and LGBTQIA+ affirming scaffolding in my practice and I am always learning more in this respect. Therapy should feel safe, empowering, collaborative, and be a place where communication is transparent.

You're stuck. Overwhelmed. Everyone and everything is demanding your energy, and you don't have anything left for yourself. What's worse, you've tried all the things already. You follow all the therapist IG accounts, you read the books, you journal and you have limitless insight into your difficulties, and yet your frustration and resentment haven't budged. Doing it all by yourself isn't getting results, because humans don't heal in isolation. So here you are, reaching out to another human being for support. And here I am, ready to empower you to move to the other side of your suffering.

I view therapy as a partnership, one where individuals can feel empowered to be their most genuine self and take ownership of their stories and values. I strive to create a nonjudgmental, warm, and culturally affirming environment where individuals can find a sense of relief from life’s biggest challenges and work towards their own healing. I view every client as a unique individual and will adapt my approach based on what they need. When appropriate and if the client is comfortable with it, I also enjoy adding in some lightness and humor into sessions.

We live in times of incredible stress and unbelievably high expectations. I’m sure you hear your mind telling you to “push through” or “get over it.” Can you tell what it says when you finally let yourself accept that you need help?

I enjoy working with a wide range of clients in terms of age, background, gender, and sexual orientation. I have several years of experience working with adolescents and those who have experienced complex trauma. I am interested in working with members of the vast LGBTQ population, as well as adult children of alcoholics, and those on the autism spectrum. I am passionate about exploring various aspects of identity and how the intersections of those identities impact our experiences in the world.

You know you are capable, and yet you feel like a failure. No matter how hard you try, you never feel like you are enough. Other people seem to handle life easily, and yet you struggle with everyday things. You have the desire and motivation to succeed, but things always seem to get in the way, and it always seems like your fault.

Many people enter therapy with me because they're experiencing problems with living. Often they've come to realize these problems seem to repeat themselves over and over again. Examples include managing intense and painful feelings, cultivating and sustaining intimate relationships and struggling to maintain an overall sense of well-being over time.

I often describe my approach as integrative, using different techniques and perspectives to address each individual's unique needs. I work to create an nonjudgmental, unconditional, accepting, and supportive space. My job is to listen and honor your experience. However, while listening certainly goes a long way, it is not the only part of therapy. We will work as a team to address your personal needs and concerns. Therapy is a space for us to build something together.

Jewish Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
