I invite everyone to share the counseling space with me, but I have experience working with those dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, and OCD. I enjoy working with people who are looking to create a change in their life or those who are seeking to explore more of themselves. Additionally, I seek to make my space a comfortable one for those are LGBTQIA+ and love working with clients on topics related to their gender or sexuality.

On the outside, you look cool, calm and collected. Internally...there is a whirling tornado of thoughts, sensations, emotions... You may be looking for guidance on your journey of learning the how's and why's behind the things you do and think. Life can be a big, overwhelming, and never ending "to do" list that you are working hard to manage and looking for encouraging support to help you breathe and decompress. You are seeking a safe space to express, collaborate and learn ways to cultivate self esteem, focus, and success with managing life.

Are you overwhelmed by the demands of your various roles or feel like despite having a great life, something is missing? Maybe you worry about what’s next in life, or are stuck in a loop in one of your relationships, repeating the same argument over and over. This could be complicated by ADHD, a life transition, or health challenges. I love helping clients in this boat who want to learn about themselves, actively address problems and heal wounds, as well as build skills and develop resilience to create the lives they want. I balance accepting who you are with gently challenging you to grow.

I am extremely passionate with working with pre-teens and teens in helping them navigate academic and social pressures, anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, as well as gender and racial identity. My work with youth is guided by my person centered, solution focused and strengths based perspective where gaining confidence, promoting resiliency and identifying healthy coping strategies are just a few of the ways that I hope to help. I find that my biggest strength involves my keen relatability to youth that makes it easy for them to connect with me and form a strong, trusting relationship.

When I was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine, the comfort of someone speaking my language was immeasurable. Speaking your language is important to me. Whether it’s through humor, warmth, empathy, or directness, I strive to make therapy relieving rather than another foreign experience. When therapists discuss what type of therapy they do, is it just another set of abbreviations with absolutely no meaning? Let me be your translator. I deeply value education, so if you are unfamiliar with any of the therapies I list below, I will explain extensively as to how they work within session. If you like learning, I'm your person.

Looking for a therapist to help you get from where you are to the better life you seek can be overwhelming and confusing. I believe YOU are the expert on your life, and when you choose to work with me I respect and listen to you. I have had training in powerful, up-to-date approaches that bring about fast and effective relief for many problems, but nothing is more important than learning from you and working with you to make things better.

Inquiring Minds Counseling & Consultation was founded under the inherent reciprocity between human connection. In our process together we will collaborate, inquire into your story, curiously reflect on the uniqueness that is you and the experiences that have led you to this point. Together we will work to piece together the webs of connection between your formative experiences, family, culture, gender identity, religious or spiritual orientation, community influences and trauma. Together we will find that you are not defective, broken or in need of repair—in fact, you are coming more fully into who you are meant to be.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
