Life often causes deep troubled feelings: depression and anxiety, self-doubt and insecurity, tense fights in relationships, and emotional distance with loved ones. We feel hurt, put down, and wounded by those around us. We feel we don’t measure up, that our feelings don’t matter, and we have way more flaws than strengths. All these things are related to ONE thing: We have self-defeating habits of thinking and inadequate skills for working through deep troubled emotions. All these can be shifted and healed with the right kind of help so that we feel greater harmony and closeness in our relationships and deeper love and peace inside.

I like to come at therapy kind of like I would a drummer at a jam session. I'm there to find a groove with another voice. I want to communicate with you and help you to open up and learn to express yourself. We will seek understanding first and then we will find a way to encourage healing and growth that is unique to you and builds a stronger identity. I am strengths-based and I like to find existing skills to help a client build a new way of thinking and interacting with their body. This is also a very effective way of beginning the process of healing symptoms of PTSD in conjunction with other evidence based trauma treatments.

There’s a reason you’re searching for a therapist - something in life isn’t quite right. Are pain, trauma, and mental health issues in the driver's seat? Are you tired of being unsatisfied with your life? That makes sense! Therapy can help.

Our typical clients are people struggling with depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide—most grappling with deep emotional and relational struggles that stem from dysfunctional patterns and relationships throughout their life. Our therapy work is almost always systemic; identifying disempowering patterns in your life, working to break out of these dysfunctional pattern and then inviting and teaching other important people in your life how to support you in healthier living.

I seek to help clients who are interested in psychological testing and psychotherapy. I strive to use therapeutic assessment procedures that not only help us arrive at a diagnostic conclusion, but also at place where there is a possibility for a new relationship with the difficult condition itself. In providing psychotherapy, I try to emphasize that life's challenges, even the most painful or uncertain, contain the seedlings of new possibilities. As we approach them together, we can open a door to renewed purpose in pursuit of what matters most to you. Don't quit! We can never exhaust our ability to experience something new!

I take a holistic approach to addressing therapy that focuses on helping you to understand and embrace all parts of you and live and authentic life. My ultimate goal is for you to learn to trust yourself and your body and to feel like you are worthy of being loved and treated with respect. Treatment with me tends to be relatively short-term as we purposefully work to understand what makes you feel the need to repress your emotions, how this may connect to your depression or relationship problems, and specifically creating experiences that help you are worthy to live, to love, and be yourself.

I believe that humans are wired for meaning, connection, and belonging. Most of our struggles in life are intimately tied to how we experience our relationships—including with ourselves—and how we find purpose. Through a unique integration of Western and Eastern principles of human thriving, I support individuals and couples seeking emotional, sexual, and spiritual wholeness, as well as deeper healing and intimacy in their relationships with themselves and others. As awareness precedes power, my goal is to help clients increase in self-understanding so they feel empowered to then address personal difficulties on their own terms.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
