Just as the moon passes through different phases, so do we. Some phases are darker and some brighter than others, as is life. A new moon represents new beginnings, growth, rebirth, and renewed energy. I started practicing as Luna Nueva Mental Health, LLC, so I could accompany clients on their journeys toward healing, understanding, and coping with each new phase, change, and season in life. I offer psychotherapy as well as somatic thearpy utilizing training in Internal Family Systems and Brainspotting.

I have worked primarily with clients who are suicidal and self harming with BPD. I have also worked with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, couples therapy, adolescent populations, addiction issues as well as LGBTQ issues. I also helped many people who have experienced loss, physical trauma, emotional abuse and complex PTSD. My therapy style is warm, interactive, and non-judgmental. I have an irreverent attitude that allows for an accepting atmosphere. I believe in treating all people with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and I don't believe in stigmatizing labels.

Temporarily, I am only accepting new clients with Presbyterian Medicaid. Looking forward to speaking with you. Take Care. Diane

If white knuckling, self shaming, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and putting on your big girl panties worked, you’d be “cured” a billion times over. It doesn’t. At least not for me or people whose brains are different. Our minds race and it feels impossible to turn off and rest. Sometimes we use substances or other behaviors in a harmful way just to get through the day. There’s more to life out there. A more peaceful and meaningful life is possible. We need to go deeper and get to the root of things. I’ll go with you.

NOTE: I am presently on medical leave and unavailable. My therapeutic approach is strengths-based, and centered on the belief that with help, you can learn to think, feel and behave better. My therapeutic role is to promote enhanced self-awareness, encourage coping skills, and foster personal responsibility. These skills will enable you to respond better to adversity and maintain a healthier perspective on your difficulties. You will also realize that you CAN learn to stabilize and reassure yourself when problems arise (as they always do), and thereby work through them more effectively.

What does it mean to love and be loved? How do we choose safe partners? How do we relationship in healthy ways? As a therapist, I hold that my role is to journey with you along your unique healing path. I believe that when we love with our whole selves it ripples out into our communities in restorative ways and have focused my work with those of us who have or are currently experiencing domestic and interpersonal violence. Children experiencing ongoing stress, internal conflicts and or trauma, often, more than other's their own age, resort to acting-out at home, at school, and in the community, and will do things such as; not following or ignoring directions, yelling, crying, screaming, hitting, throwing things, as well as fighting with sibling, peers, and adults. Parents do their best, but sometimes feel overwhelmed or even guilty, where despite all of their efforts, the child continues to misbehave. The hardest part, is that parents and kids want resolution, a return to a better relationship, but sometimes it's hard to know where to start.

As we travel through the journey of life we inevitably run into obstacles that challenge our coping skills, our way of life, and even our spiritual faith. Hurdles such as loss of focus, loss of relationships, grief, stress, addictions, past and current trauma, depression, and anxiety can seriously challenge our ability to live the life we had imagined; sometimes we even lose our way and direction.

Your mental health shouldn’t deplete your quality of life, or keep you from experiencing the abundance you deserve. Is there something that’s been weighing on your heart, or new emotions that have recently surfaced? You don’t have to live with a weight on your shoulders forever. Sometimes taking the first step toward healing is the hardest milestone. Psychotherapy can treat symptoms of low self-esteem, constant worry, difficulty with social interactions, or feelings of sadness. I encourage clients to enter with an open heart, a desire for change, and a willingness to discuss their experiences.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
