in Marriage & Family Therapy from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology; Treatment of Sexual Assault Survivors via Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy training from Strength United.
Are relationships supposed to be this hard? When sexual issues keep you from maintaining or obtaining a happy relationship it's time to see a sex therapist. As a sex & relationship specialist, I successfully treat people with issues surrounding sexual desire & performance, sexual trauma, problems with arousal or orgasm, differences in the amount of sex they'd like to have, & sexual pain disorders such as vaginismus. I assist clients in building intimacy by deepening their mutual understanding & compassion (for their often very opposite mate!) and help them stay accountable for taking positive action to improve relationships.

At times, we experience painful feelings of guilt and shame, or think "I am not good enough". I specialize in helping individuals with severe sexual abuse & trauma. My primary approach is called EMDR, a mind and body therapy which can help you cope more effectively with painful emotions. When a person experiences mild to severe trauma such as abuse, divorce, job stress, or a life-threatening illness, the brain cannot always process the event as it should. As a result, trauma can have a lasting effect and can interfere with your relationships, job and coping with everyday life. EMDR treatment can help move toward healing.

In addition to eating disorders, trauma, and general mental health, I have some specialization in working with Dissociative Disorders and survivors of trafficking and extended childhood sexual abuse.
I specialize in treating C-PTSD and eating disorders, but also work with clients seeking healing from depression, anxiety, and general mental health concerns. Whether your trauma is a "Big T" or "Little T" trauma, I believe all our nervous systems need healing and restoration after experiences that leave us confused, unsafe, or disconnected. Whatever you are going through, you'll find a nonjudgmental, supportive space in our work.

I'm especially seasoned in working with trauma and helping folks navigate their interpersonal relationships and relationship to self. Collaboration, awareness, and transformation are key components to my therapy practice.

I have over 10 years experience interacting with families in crisis, ranging from domestic violence, sexual abuse, and crisis management.
Life does not come with an instruction manual. I believe that sometimes we just need a safe place where we can share and be heard until we're able to assemble our thoughts and put the pieces together. I provide a client centered environment, offering empathy, a non-judgmental, reassuring hopeful atmosphere. I work together with my clients to support and establish their goals so that they will ultimately discover and develop their inner strengths.

I specialize in helping people recover from sexual abuse and unhealthy relationships, helping them to once again trust their own instincts, and speak up for their true needs.
Are you struggling with anxiety and trauma and turning towards unhealthy coping mechanisms in an attempt to manage your emotions? Now is a trying time for almost everyone, and if you have a trauma background what's coming up in the current environment may be reminiscent of the stress, isolation, and fear induced by early childhood experiences. You don't have to handle this alone, and with clinically tested techniques to regulate the mind and body, it's possible to shift from a place of disempowerment to strength.

You're a smart, motivated professional. You've managed to piece together a life and career that in many ways you're proud of and looks good. But you often find yourself repeating patterns in relationships or with yourself that you'd like to start to break. You may feel anxious and isolated, despite having people around you. Or perhaps it's hard to settle into relationships when you're constantly fighting off reminders of prior traumas in which people let you down, whether from an abusive or neglectful childhood or something more recent. You may need support to be seen and heard, and to start to make sense of things.

Our sexualities are such a profound and meaningful part of our identities, our lives, our relationships and our places in the world. Yet our society can be as much of a problem in claiming our full and healthy experiences of sex as it might make space to welcome who we are, who we love, how we live our relationships. Helping people deal with those kinds of conflicts has been the great motivator of a long and happy, effective, mental health career. I'd love to talk with you about what's going on that's in the way of your happiness and satisfaction.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
