We often go through life transitions unaware of how the past might still have a hold on us. Sometimes we simply need to take a moment to reflect on how experiences and relationships have shaped our perception of ourselves and situations. Processing how past traumas are linked to the present can help us to recover, heal, and to understand how behavior patterns and responses are formed in the first place so that we can change for the better.

No matter what’s bringing you to therapy, it’s safe to say something’s not going the way you’d like. You might be feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, unmotivated, confused, riddled with dread, or tired of the same patterns playing out both internally and in your relationships. Or maybe something’s just not going the way you thought it would and you don’t even know how or where to start changing it. On top of that, trying to find a therapist can feel daunting as well.

My approach is rooted in mindfulness and integrates psychodynamic theory, depth psychology, somatic psychology and nervous system regulation.
The capacity for healing resides in everyone. Therapy is about unhooking from self-limiting adaptive patterns, while cultivating self-acceptance and reconnecting with essential wise parts of yourself. I work with men and women using a depth-oriented, body-mind approach to explore the complexity of identity and relationships. My aim is to help you understand from an embodied perspective the deeper dynamics of your struggle, strengthen the parts inside of you that can move beyond it and engage in life with a greater sense of meaning, strength, and self-compassion.

My client-centered approach to therapy places my clients at the forefront of their own healing journey as I guide and support each one of them. I believe that individuals are the experts of their lives and that my role is to provide a safe and nurturing space for growth. My goal is to assist in identifying strengths and inherent characteristics to fuel resiliency in each client. Clients are coached to understand that decisions made, relationships entered into, and responses to triggers are integral in the healing process by recognizing that trauma in its many forms impacts engagement in repetitive and/or negative behaviors.

You want to experience stability and fulfillment in your intimate relationship that matches your steady and confident professional life. However, feeling safe enough to trust your partner or your own judgment has eluded you. It's confusing, difficult, and feels messy. You're in your late 20s to late 30s and aware of possible intergenerational patterns and trauma. You hope that with a right-fit therapist, you can work with your emotions embedded in cultural and contextual roots and take healthy steps that sometimes feel like "risks" but are aligned with the growth you want to see for yourself.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
