Many of us use ways we coped in the past and we find ourselves blocked in the present. Maybe old strategies which once worked for you no longer function well in the present. And you'd like to explore possible changes. Perhaps I can help. In my work, I seek, with you, to identify and connect past feelings and previous ways to adapt with your present. As you begin to know more about yourself and your feelings, increased understanding can lead to change.

I am passionate about helping individuals gain greater insight, self-awareness, and ultimately find their way toward healthy living. This can be done by exploring and understanding behavioral and relational patterns, as well as past experiences, while highlighting areas where changes can be made, resulting in more life-satisfaction. My experience is working with children, adolescents, adults who battle an array of mental health issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, challenging life transitions, relational issues, body image issues, maladaptive thought processes, and low self-esteem.

You know something isn’t quite right in your life, but you don’t know what to do about it. Asking for help can be difficult, even scary sometimes. It takes courage to take the first step to make your life better. Therapy could be that step. Emotions are involuntary. We can’t help what we feel. We can work on understanding them and choosing how to behave based on that understanding. Psychotherapy helps you understand yourself and your emotions better—which gives you more control over yourself.

Given that I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst, one might deduce that I am very intelligent and really good at what I do. Of course, there are other possibilities like I'm a glutton for punishment or just another ordinary obsessive over-achiever. The point is that credentials and education are but one important factor that go into making a good psychotherapist. I strive to NOT make assumtions, but to listen, understand, respect, be sensitive yet objective and flexible, tailoring the treatment to the needs of my patient instead of the other way around.

I work mostly with relationship and sexual problems; mood disorders; and work problems. People's needs in psychotherapy differ. Some people need a safe place to explore their inner life. Others need direct advice. Most people need both and I try to provide both. People do well when they understand their current problems in relation to both their personality and the arc of their life - past, present, and where they can head. It also helps to understand the roles we take in our lives, wanted or unwanted, consciously and unconsciously, in response to social dynamics of race, gender and sexual preferences.

I have an holistic approach to mental health. As a trauma and resiliency trained LMFT, I incorporate a variety of interventions which address the mind, body, and emotions, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), TRM (Trauma Resiliency Model), somatic awareness, mindfulness, and meditation. In addition to helping people experience relief from trauma, I work with individuals, couples, and families who are struggling with anxiety or depression, looking to improve their relationships, process grief and loss, and cope more effectively with the challenges of caring for aging parents while raising children.

For the past 35 years my emphasis has been on adult, couples, and family psychotherapy, Some of the issues presented to me have been mood disorders, depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, oppositionality, social phobia, and issues involving communication and conflict resolution skills.
I believe successful therapy needs to begin with a trusting, compatible relationship between you and me. If we can establish this foundation for treatment then we can move forward to identify your strengths as a unique individual, and work to uncover and resolve the elements in your life that are preventing personal growth and a gratifying lifestyle. I provide an initial free phone consultation, and offer phone sessions. I work on a sliding scale, and am a provider for Medicare, Blue Shield, Magellan, and Humana. I am NOT a provider for Medi-Cal. I can also bill your insurance company excluding your co-pay.

An ideal client for my treatment mode would be someone who is either motivated for refinement of spirit, or would possess enough intelligence and wisdom to be able to gain enough insight into the nature of their condition so that they would embrace expert intervention with a degree of trust in harmony with adequate judgment into the need for treatment. He or she may engage in therapy alone, but where family history of emotional challenges exist, they would consider family therapy if all parties consent.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
