I'm told I'm warm, smart, and that I have a good sense of humor. (Sometimes my dog likes to sit in on sessions.) I believe therapy has got to change lives -- and be enjoyable. Unlike some therapists, I believe in setting goals and tracking progress. Why go to therapy without results? What's my specialty? Helping people free themselves from what holds them back. My approach combines Positive Psychology and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) with mindfulness and a creative mix of the best approaches known to modern psychology.

You may be struggling in a situation that, for whatever reasons, is not improving as you had hoped it would. And now you might be experiencing unwanted emotions related to COVID-19; relationship struggles; parenting; marital difficulties; family conflict; a recent trauma; or something else that is painfully impacting you and one or more of your relationships. Are you losing sleep, feeling sad, anxious, depressed, confused, or feeling helpless right now? Feeling stuck? If so and you're here, you're probably tired of trying to figure all of this out by yourself. The good news is you don't have to be alone with all of this anymore.

I am here to help you get unstuck and reclaim your natural state of joy, well-being, purpose, and vitality. "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure (Marianne Williamson)." In our fast-paced world, it's easy to lose touch with ourselves and our sense of well-being. This has led to a rise in depression/anxiety, substance abuse, marital/relationship issues, and other difficulties. I am skilled at alleviating these symptoms and have been successful in working with individuals, couples, children/adolescents, and families of all ages backgrounds.

Thank you for taking a moment to read about me and my work. My approach uses insight and depth psychotherapy combined with Mindfulness within a framework of awareness of the body. When our living process becomes stuck, therapy can move it forward. If you feel stuck in repetitive behaviors, painful feelings, and recurring anxious thoughts, I want to help you to identify how you are bogged down, so you can feel better. I can help to re-focus a sense of purpose...a way to step into your life more completely. This may include taking action if feeling adrift, or bringing clarity to a relationship.

Life can be unpredictable and the challenges that come with it can leave lasting impacts that leave us feeling disconnected. Many of these challenges come without choice, these individual experiences can be arduous and demanding. I approach therapy with this in mind, undertaking an honest understanding of how your feelings and behaviors have changed in response to your lived experiences. I want to foster a safe space for you to process your journey, acknowledge your experiences, and best support your individual needs.

Here you are. That inner you whom you talk to about your life. That you which you talk to, negotiate with, respond to, reflect to, make comments with, console, and confide in all your inner secrets. Your inner, personal, living being within your body. Then there is actuality. The world surrounding you. The world you find yourself in. A world that is open to permit anything to happen. A world that nourishes all living things to evolve into their highest and best selves. All within the creative laws of nature. And here you find yourself ready to grow, adapt, and create the life you can create. So what's preventing your life's success?

I teach couples powerful tools and give homework. My background is in Positive Psychology. People describe me as warm, down-to-earth and they say I have a good sense of humor. I think couples therapy should be uplifting -- and show results. I help all kinds of couples: married and unmarried, straight, gay, and couples soon to marry. I'm dedicated to helping couples overcome their problems. I'm even-handed and I find solutions. (And on a personal note, I've been happily married for 30 years). I combine Positive Psychology, CBT, mindfulness, Gottman, and the best of contemporary psychology. I taught in the medical school at UCLA.

Gestalt Therapists

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
