I am LGBTQ and multi-cultural affirming influenced by the intersectionality of culture, spirituality and psychotherapy.
Has life attempted to convince you that you are not enough? Do you feel pressured to fulfill everyone else’s expectations for your life? Is it difficult to believe in your abilities from day to day? Have you found yourself conforming to societal expectations you do not agree with and wonder if the story will ever change? If you are feeling hopeless, exhausted or as if you are the only person living this reality and isolated from the rest of the world, I would like to help.

At different points in our lives, we may find ourselves navigating difficult waters. These periods are tender and sacred, and having the light and guidance of a therapist can be healing in many ways. I have a genuine interest in getting to know you and holding a warm, gentle, nonjudgmental space for you to explore yourself. I am curious about the identities you embody and how these identities intersect and dance within a larger context of family, community, culture, and social systems.

Our creative and determined brain allows us to “make it through” whatever life throws our way. We develop ideals, patterns, behaviors, and ways of thinking about the world, ourselves, and others. These things that at one point were meant to be protective and preserve us can overtime unknowingly to us be the very thing that gets in our way preventing us from living the life we ultimately desire. It can manifest itself in ways such as feeling frustrated with ourselves, feeling stuck, disconnected from our body, or even frozen with anxiety, depression, and maybe suicidal thoughts.

I traditionally work with stressed teens, men that have trouble identifying their emotional difficulties, women that feel under appreciated, LGBT persons, and couples struggling with intimacy issues. I have a contemplative and humanistic approach to therapy that stresses the inherent value and worth of every person. How we come to understand our sense of self worth can be elaborated with sociological, anthropological, and various academic lenses, but at the end of the day, your experience of your life is what I am interested in. I've been fascinated with how people change and don't change over the last 30 years. There is some stickiness in ourselves and others I think we'd all like to feel the power to transform. I've realized that fears about the sense of self not being good enough, lovable, or valuable knock us out of our connection to our internal core values, right in the moment where our core values would transform the situation. Contemplate when you let yourself down and don't follow through with what you know you want to do. Reflect on the times you've needed compassion and only received an evaluation. How would you change all this stickiness?

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
