My training as a sex therapist and then being Co-Director of the UCLA Human Sexuality Clinic for 10 years provides me with a solid background to work with sexual dysfunction, sexual addiction/compulsion, or sexual trauma in a caring and direct way.
I work mainly with adults and late adolescents, individually, in couples and in groups. The areas I specialize in are sexual issues (individuals or couples), adults molested as children, emotional intimacy, communication, anxiety, depression, self-awareness, and deep and lasting character change. In my 45 years of practicing counseling and psychotherapy I've worked with a wide variety of people of different ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, religions, and those with physical challenges. I find it immensely rewarding to work with people who are actively seeking to resolve problems through increased self-awareness.

Welcome to my practice. I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

I provide individual, couples, and family therapy at my private practice on the Huntington Beach Hospital campus. Much of my work is with clients struggling with anxiety, dysphoria, or depression, or in their relationships with their romantic partners/spouses or their families-of-origin. I find strengths they've forgotten they have that can be used to defeat their problems. I use Narrative and Cognitive-Behavioral therapies and when working with couples I use Emotion Focused Therapy. Research has shown that 70-75% of couples who undergo EFT become closer and more intimate and 90% of them show significant improvements.

My theoretical approach pulls from Cognitive Behavioral Theory and many successful techniques (humanistic, strategic, psychodynamic, and solution focused), which allows me to personally tailor your therapy session based upon your unique needs in an eclectic and integrated approach to therapy. Therapist flexibility is a valuable tool in helping my clients gain a balanced perspective on the life issues they are facing. I view therapy as a collaborative, sharing experience and seek to help my clients feel safe, comfortable, and truly understood.

The healing process begins with choosing a therapist with whom you are comfortable. You may be overwhelmed by trying to manage problems, conflicts, personal performance, or transitions in your life, and find that the support of family and friends is not sufficient. My approach as a therapist is to provide a safe, supportive, and confidential environment, and to partner with my clients to not only alleviate the presenting symptoms, but also their underlying causes.

Sex Therapy

Who is sex therapy for?

Sex problems are common in relationships. Many people want a better sex life and want to feel loved and desired by their partner. It is difficult for couples to resolve sexual problems on their own because people often feel ashamed to talk about their sexual desires fearing they are not normal, when in fact a very broad range of preferences and behaviors are normal. A sex therapist can help clarify this and other matters.

Why do people need sex therapy?

Many people do not know how to talk about their erotic needs or their emotional needs, both of which are addressed in sex therapy. Couples often live with sexual difficulties for years before seeking help, and in that time, partners may experience so much disappointment and alienation that they may fear their problems mean they are incompatible. Once people experience disappointment, it is difficult to find resolution without help.

What happens in sex therapy?

People have many misconceptions about what takes place in sex therapy. First, it is a form of talk therapy in which partners discuss their sexual concerns; it does not involve touching or physical exploration of any kind. Sex therapy typically helps couples get comfortable talking to each other about sex so that, in the privacy of their home life, they can openly discuss their sexual desires and make decisions about what they want to do. Couples are typically assigned activities to do at home that build intimacy skills.

What kinds of problems do sex therapists treat?

Very often, partners differ in their degree of sexual desire and struggle over how often to have sex. Or they may have fights about porn use or have difficulty connecting sexually after one partner is unfaithful. Men may have problems with premature ejaculation. Women may find themselves struggling to become aroused or to achieve an orgasm. Sometimes partners feel like they have lost the sense of attraction to their partner. These are all common issues dealt with in sex therapy.
