Therapy is a co-created, immersive experience. You are invited to bring all of you, in your own time and at your own pace. Your multiplicities, contradictions, and inner conflicts are all welcome. Therapy traverses the sacred and mundane, and I see all topics as meaningful on the path of healing. I specialize in grief, self-esteem, (family) conflict and communication, dating and sex, and identity (de)construction. My flexible and relational therapeutic style suits a wide array of individuals. I especially welcome people who identify as being children of immigrants, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, highly sensitive, and/or spiritually inclined.

Reaching out for help can be one of the hardest things to do when you're struggling the most. What if no one understands you or you feel judged? How do you know you can trust them to take you seriously or care? I understand that these are natural fears when you're sharing the hurt and vulnerable parts of yourself. For this reason, my goal is to make sure you feel safe and heard by providing an empathetic and judgement-free space regardless of your background.

I’ve studied and practiced many methods. I like to be eclectic and work with you with what’s needed to get you back on track and feeling your best. I was a teacher for many years, then went for my masters in social work. Life has many twists and turns. Sometimes we can feel off balance or are suffering from depression or anxiety. We’ve all had our ups and downs and getting back on track and feeling our best is a goal I enjoy helping people achieve.

Welcome! So, you decided to check this out? Carolina is glad you did. I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist in California. Deciding to take on therapy can be a nerve-racking experience. Therapy is a place for you to express your thoughts and understand your emotions in a safe and supportive environment. My method is nontraditional in the sense that I engage in back-and-forth dialogue rather than the conversation being one-sided. My experience with community mental health and psychiatric hospitals influenced a Cognitive Behavioral and solution-focused approach.

I also have extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults who are experiencing relationship/family issues, divorce, and LGBTQ challenges.
Are you hindered by anxiety, depression, or trauma, preventing you from expressing your authentic self? Do you find yourself trapped in navigating challenging family and relationship situations? Every minor issue now feels incredibly overwhelming, reopening past wounds and creating new ones. Despite attempting to bury the pain, it persists, leaving you feeling isolated and tormented. The constant exhaustion, stress, and anger make you question your resilience. Unsure of where to seek assistance, you don't have to endure this painful journey by yourself. I aim to assist you in achieving a more integrated and balanced sense of self.

Coping with life's changes can be overwhelming, especially when societal, familial, and personal expectations weigh on you. We all aspire to lead fulfilling lives and find happiness once more, but we are often expected to be grateful, to stop complaining, and to not talk about our feelings. So many of us feel these challenges but believe we’re the only ones. I was born in Hong Kong and came to the U.S. during my teenage years. Learning a new culture and speaking a different language while expected to be successful. Having support makes a world of difference. 请在页面上按“中文”以中文阅读我的简介

You are here for that sense of belonging & connection, especially when multiple global crises have left communities hopeless, and in a constant state of vigilance. While some anxiety/depression is a normal response to the hyper-violence we are facing as a collective (on screens or in reality), it can feel extremely overwhelming to experience this every day, on top of expectations from work, family, and other relationships. As a child of the Lao Isaan/Southeast Asian diaspora, my passion is working with fellow children of refugee/immigrant diasporas to feel seen + heard + validated through an anti-oppressive framework.

Choosing a therapist for you and your family is not only a great step but also intimidating. How do you know who is competent and who can best work with the most important people in your life (self, family, child, partner). Like all relationships, there needs to be a good fit where you can trust and know the person is knowledgable and has your best interest. Please feel free to look at my websites www.thetonkinscenter.com for private practice and www.creativecustodysolutions.com for pre/post divorce work. All the best. Dr. Sue

I have worked with both adults and children. Most of my work has targeted the effects of trauma. I am committed to helping people understand the root of their behaviors, thought processes, and emotions. It is important for individuals to gather understanding of the “why” of their bases of thoughts, feelings, and symptoms.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
