Each one of us possesses problem-solving strengths. In times of transition and stress, these strengths can seem dormant. Therapy can uncover and further develop a personal resiliency. Having someone there to guide us on our path, through the brambles of life can be helpful. I believe therapy is a collaborative endeavor and my goal is to meet you where you are, with your life experience, self-awareness and intention.

Any of us, from adults to very young children, can experience life challenges that require the caring support of other people. Sometimes we need help to navigate these challenges, and to heal, reorient, and move forward in our lives toward better health and wholeness. When the emotional support of friends and family is not enough, establishing a safe, collaborative relationship with a psychotherapist can be a valuable resource.

Whatever issues or concerns bring you to counseling, I appreciate and respect that you are the EXPERT on your life. Your feelings are valid. Together we will figure out what counseling style is most comfortable for you (e.g., psychodynamic, art therapeutic) and work from that perspective. Whatever your goal (e.g., finding calm in the storm, mindfully retracing life's twists and turns, rejoining life), you don't have to be alone in your journey. I enjoy supporting individuals traveling the path of self-discovery. I know that opening up can be scary. Seeing and hearing your truth can also be life affirming, lifesaving. Do the work.

Therapy can offer many things: support, coping skills, and (perhaps most importantly) a place to set down your “armor” and rest. Taking this step is a powerful act of self kindness and self advocacy. In therapy we will hold your unique story, needs, and strengths, and together create a path forward. I believe the therapeutic relationship is a place to cultivate trust and to experience acceptance and compassion.

My work is to walk with people in liberatory practices that allow us to return home to ourselves, our communities, and our place in this world. I aim to embody an orientation toward collective liberation. The mental health industry is deeply influenced by white supremacy, capitalism, and colonialism. As a white, queer, gender-resistant, liberation-oriented therapist, I aim to disrupt and dismantle those oppressive systems as they exist within me and in the larger society. I incorporate decolonial, abolitionist, and transformative justice frameworks into our work as we meet one-on-one or in many relational configurations.

I believe that any person is capable of growth and healing. My approach to the therapeutic process is a collaborative one, in which I work with my clients to find their personal strengths and help them utilize those strengths as they address their own challenges and work toward improving their lives.. I also believe it's important to recognize both the internal and external factors that impact one's mental health, and I see it as my job to help clients recognize what external factors are creating stress, and then work with them to develop strategies to manage, minimize or eliminate those stressors.

My ideal client is anyone that is aware they would like to live a more fulfilling life, motivated to make changes, be open to new ideas and possibilities and learn to approach those possibilities with curiosity. They are willing to face their fears and have the desire to learn to trust themselves. They are able to accept and receive compassionate support, but feel empowered to communicate what is true for them, what works for them, what their needs are, etc.

I work with preteens, teens, adolescents, and parents to navigate the challenging transition of childhood to early adulthood. I believe in the importance of relationship. We aren't ourselves when we feel uncomfortable, so my work centers on establishing a working relationship that fosters connection, collaboration, and mutual understanding. I believe that “you are the expert on you” and work to understand my client’s personal values and life perspective. Once I have a sense of who you are, we will begin to identify behavior patterns and increase awareness to focus on making meaningful changes that are right for you.

Sometimes we can be dealt a lot of blows or disappointments in life and it's tough slogging though it alone. I welcome working with those who are facing transitions or relationship difficulties, have depression and/or anxiety, among other life issues. Sometimes family issues and past wounds can become a focus of treatment. Receiving therapeutic support during these critical moments can make a positive and lasting difference.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
