We enter psychotherapy for a wide variety of reasons: The death or loss of a loved one, illness, job loss, divorce, addiction, etc., but all of us seek help because we are trying to find a better way to deal with the reality we are facing. My job as a psychotherapist is to help you talk about your emotions and reactions in a safe environment, figure out where these emotions and reactions are coming from, observe whether your reactions produce the desired outcomes and, discover new ways to react, if that would produce more desirable outcomes

Do you often think that the way you react, behave, and feel is wrong? Maybe you think you are too dramatic, too sensitive, or too angry, and just want to push the emotions away so you don’t have to feel anymore. But, you find that they don’t go away, regardless of what you do. This probably makes you feel frustrated, ashamed, and completely out of control. Imagine a life where you did not feel this way. You did not feel controlled by your emotions, you found joy in the ups and downs, and you felt more confident to be the person you have always wanted to be.

I work with clients to ensure that they are receiving the care that works with their unique goals, and that they feel witnessed through their journey. I work with clients, from youths to adults, who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, sex and intimacy challenges, and interpersonal relationship issues. My aim is to support and guide clients using a mind-body approach that cultivates more depth from their self-reflection and emotional processing. I approach this work with openness, and aim to create a safe and brave space where these stories are both held and heard.

I help teenagers and adults manage anxiety stemming from life transitions, work-life balance, and trauma. Anxiety and past experiences should not define one's value or future, and we can make active changes to overcome these challenges. Many complain about how exhausting anxiety can be - but we don't have to resign to living like this forever. The way I see it, the goal of therapy is to both get to know yourself and your anxiety, but also to take back control to minimize its impact on relationships and academic or professional development.

Susan works with individuals from all walks of life who may embrace a range of mental health needs. She recognizes that each individual may need to seek therapy for a number of reasons, such as receiving support during tremendous transitions in life; to face and endure new challenges; or even to deal with the difficulties that one may encounter. Susan believes that every individual has the innate capacity to cope with the challenges that life offers, but it can be difficult to access these abilities from the experiences that each of us have had before.

It's a fact that talking helps. You'll find that our sessions are rich, interactive, and inspiring. We work together to strengthen your resolve, manage your symptoms, and increase your ability to choose more consciously. There are many ways to understand your unique circumstances. Since I began practicing in 2003, I have developed the skill to tailor a number of psychotherapeutic theories to the specific needs of my clients. With so many stressors, one's point of view can get lost, and yet the greatest and most undervalued resource is yourself. Our sessions make you the focal point, and from there much can happen.

Sometimes , the journey of life can be a rough one. You feel lost, defeated, alone, and full of fear. But you haven’t given up. There’s a part of you that tells you that somehow there’s still hope, that you just need a helping hand.

People of all ages have expertise on their own lives. When problems linger and impact mental health and well-being, collaborating with a therapist who is a good fit for you can provide a safe space to establish perspective and highlight the unique values, skills and knowledge you bring to your lived experience. I strive to create warm, respectful and strength-based working relationships that allow us to identify problem solving skills and abilities to reduce the influence of the problem or dissolve it altogether. Sometimes a single consultation is useful while other problems might have us consulting for a period of time.

My practice offers counselling to young people, adults and specialized separation/parenting services for families. Challenges experienced by clients may include: navigating family change, stress, anxiety, peer/romantic relationships, self-regulation, and managing behaviours (ADHD, OCD, ODD). As a Collaborative Family Professional, I work with parents wanting to minimize conflict for their family as they go through transition and change. I provide emotional support throughout the out-of-court process, help caregivers build skills to co-parent, and neutrally facilitate meetings during the collaborative process.

And your chest clenched for attention. Skin crawling desperation. To call in sick, or to stay in bed, or to numb out with distractions that you do not feel proud of. Maybe you feel nausea or fear or shame, or an emptiness that aches inside you. Or anxiety that rarely seems to settle. Maybe you have repetitive or consuming thoughts of how incompetent or unworthy you are. Maybe you just feel simply exhausted. People come to see me to move away from feelings of overwhelm, to begin to know and trust themselves (and others) again, to begin to feel better in their lives (as they define it).

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
