I see cancer patients and their families across the cancer continuum, from diagnosis, treatment, to survivorship or recurrence and end of life. I am passionate about working with this patient group. Diagnosis and treatment of cancer is a major life stress. Cancer care today provides state of the art biomedical treatment but fails to address the psychological problems associated with the illness. Patients need support coping with a wide range of distressing emotions such as anxiety, depression and confusion. In today's managed care environment, busy outpatient clinics make it difficult for oncologists to provide psychosocial support for their patients.
Patients feel distress that may interfere with their ability to cope with cancer, its physical symptoms or its treatment, This distress, if untreated, can affect disease outcome. It can be very helpful to talk to someone like myself, who can work with them to strengthen their own coping skills.
I trained as a psycho-oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering a top US cancer hospital. My PhD ( Cancer Epidemiology) and my 20-year career in cancer clinical research give me a unique understanding of the disease and its treatments in addition to the emotional response of patients and their families.
