I specialize in helping LGBTQ+ people heal from the impacts of trauma. Using EMDR and other trauma and attachment focused techniques, I work with clients who's experiences of sexual or relationship trauma, difficult family relationships, marginalization, and more, have shaped how they see themselves and the world. As a queer, non-binary, trans person, I offer an environment where you don't have to "explain" your queerness, nor choose between a queer therapist and a trauma-focused one. My approach is social justice oriented, and based in the power of authenticity, acceptance, and attachment.

It is my hope to partner with you in learning how to first be with and then move through life's painful experiences in such a way that feels authentic to you. If you have unresolved grief, trauma or other barriers to your ability to thrive, I would love to join you in opening new doors to embodied and conscious living. I enjoy working with folks from most walks of life, those with body-based concerns such as chronic illness, chronic pain or difficult to diagnose physical symptoms that may be having an impact on mental health.

More Than Boundaries Support Group...You’ve read the book(s) on boundaries; you know you need to set and keep better boundaries in your personal life, but HOW? How can you grow from just talking about boundaries to implementing healthy boundaries that don’t get all squishy when pressure is applied? I’m Kathy Sprinkle, a certified Developmental and Relational Trauma Therapist from Counseling Alliance in Cincinnati, Ohio. Starting Monday, June 26th, I will be moderating an online support group, especially but not exclusively, for women who have been betrayed.

I enjoy being able to use my skills and training to help people who are hurting, whether they are experiencing things such as depression, anxiety, grief, or relationship issues. I aim to deeply connect with my clients and understand their feelings, as well as whatever situation they find themselves in. I accept them exactly where they are, and I work to understand where they want to go as part of therapy. I do my best to walk with them through that journey, whether it is resolving deep conflict that defines a broken relationship or dealing with the heaviness of depression, anxiety, or other issues.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples. I am an Adlerian therapist, meaning I see value in belonging and meaning-making. I also integrate neuroscience. This is especially useful when helping clients work through developmental and relational issues, trauma, and grief. Situations and experiences do not define us. Instead, with insight and support, we have the opportunity to define who we are and what we might contribute to the world. I also integrate spirituality as a source of hope and connectedness to culture and community, as requested. The cornerstone of my approach lies in encouragement and empowerment.

Together, we can sort out your challenges and plan to move beyond them. You are not alone. Life can be so hard sometimes, and the demands of family and jobs can feel overwhelming. Striving for perfection can leave us feeling guilty and exhausted. The things we turn to for comfort—such as food, alcohol, or other substances—can be harmful in the long run. Echoes of past traumas can be intrusive, but therapy can give you a chance to take a deep breath and sort out the answers that lie within. I provide a safe, non-judgmental, and open setting.

The essence of therapy is meeting the person where they are, without judgement or preconceived ideas. When troubled by depression, personal, family or job related issues, finding someone that provides mental health care is an important first step. Although difficult, it is important to take the time necessary to find a therapist who can best meet your needs. Call today to take that first step to enhanced mental health.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
