My choice to become a therapist is based on my personal experience with therapy as well as my belief that everyone has the potential to uncover and enjoy their authentic selves. I have spent time understanding the construct of identity as it relates to self-acceptance, self- worth, and self-actualization. These themes are not only core to the self, but also integral parts of our interpersonal relationships - partners, children, friends, and communities. Trauma, belief systems, and life experiences create a default mode of operation. Undoing these is a gentle process of vulnerability and self-trust.

You feel misunderstood, unnoticed, and unappreciated. You are questioning yourself and your abilities to handle life. You are thinking the same things over and over, with no real resolution. You haven’t quite found your “people” and it’s been weighing you down lately. I enjoy working with young adults who are learning who they are and what they want to offer the world, but struggle with motivation and self-esteem to accomplish their goals. I am here to help and support you.

To me, at the core of psychotherapy, is creating a working alliance with the client in a safe, perfection-free, and respectful environment. I help individuals better understand their internal emotional worlds, learn more about why they do the things they do, help them to decide for themselves what changes they would like to make in their lives, and give them guidance and support in how to do so.

People often believe their challenges are not as bad as others' and end up struggling on their own. I became a therapist to create meaningful change for clients no matter how big or small their concerns may seem. While some clients know exactly what they want from counseling, many do not. Together we can talk through your current situation and form a specialized plan that emphasizes your strengths and meets your needs.

Difficulties in our lives can interfere with our happiness, perhaps leaving us feeling stuck, anxious, depressed or angry. We want our lives to be better. Fortunately, the human spirit is resilient. This often is when we can heal, reconnect, and move forward in our life. My practice is built on the belief in our power to move from pain, change, to growth and joy. I have seen this in my life and my clients. I find success and purpose in this work. If you want to reach a better place, I have a gift for helping people achieve this, and would like to help you.

Life can be really intimidating, especially if you’re a twenty-something. You set high expectations for yourself. The pressures of work, school, friends, family, and maintaining a social life keep growing and it's becoming overwhelming. You tend to put yourself and your needs behind the needs of others. It can feel hard to say no and set boundaries with people in your life. Internally, you feel worried and overthink. You're anxious and stressed. It's uncomfortable and exhausting to feel this way. Your goal is to be happy & successful, but something keeps holding you back from living your life to the fullest.

Codependency Therapists

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
