For decades I been helping performing artists from around the world find freedom on stage and in life. I am a performance coach, licensed psychologist, singer, educator, researcher, and author. I believe that the path to peak performance starts between the ears, not in the practice room. My goal is to give performing artists the mental skills they need to freely share their gifts, tell their stories, and sing their songs! I co-authored Conquer Anxiety: How to overcome anxiety and optimize your performance. For over 30 years he has taught The Psychology of Music Performance at Brigham Young University

I had the experience that many others have had of going to therapy at a young age and finding it to be lacking. Very rarely was I asked what I wanted or what I believed would help me. For a long time, no one taught me how to trust my own voice. Now, I believe the greatest goal of counseling is to achieve a stronger relationship of trust and love with yourself. That is why I use evidence-based & trauma-informed therapy models to guide our work together, but you will always remain the expert of your life. I want to help you learn to hear, understand, and trust your own voice.

Life can be challenging and full of ups and downs. In my experience, I have found that people often seek out therapy when they are feeling stuck and life's challenges seem too hard to tackle on their own. As a therapist, you can expect from me that I will meet you where you are at, validate your feelings, and at times challenge you to make some changes with things that are keeping you stuck. I firmly believe that you are the expert of your own life and stories. I will work with you to create goals tailored towards the areas you would like to grow and heal, as well as create a safe space for you to be seen, heard, and understood.

I know picking the right therapist for this process may be difficult, so I encourage having a free phone consultation with me, to see if it feels like a good fit! It takes courage to seek the help of a therapist. My primary concern when I first meet a client is to respond with empathy and sensitivity to the distress which brings you to my office. In an atmosphere of genuine safety and acceptance we can begin the process of collaborating to understand and resolve your concerns. I draw on a number of theoretical perspectives and more than 20 years of clinical experience to provide therapy that is as effective as possible, in a compassionate, confidential and comfortable setting.

I work well with people who feel they need help becoming clear about what they personally think, feel, and believe. Often, this manifests as depression, anxiety, or addictive patterns, all of which stand in the way of a person experiencing their own potential, and maintaining fulfilling relationships. The therapy I offer is helpful for those interested in gaining clearer perspectives on their own underlying patterns that contribute to recurring emotional and relational pain. And from there, collaborating to create practical ways forward towards transformation.

I really enjoy working with people that want to improve their sexual relationship. This is a vital part of the human experience and is highly correlated with relationship and life satisfaction. Improving sexuality is different from person-to-person or couple-to-couple. My typical clientele has issues of sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, satisfaction, desire discrepancies, or out-of-control sexual behavior/sexual addiction. Those that meet with me are typical people that are really in need of a specialist with a lot of education and experience in this highly unique field of therapy.

When a person sits on my couch and says, "I'm ready to change," I often respond with, "I'm ready to help." Change is difficult. It takes work. But it happens. Giving time and space to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can give you a toolkit to adapt memories of the past and craft the future you've always wanted. Sometimes I think the job of a psychologist is to reduce suffering from mental illness, but more and more it's helping people thrive amidst adversity; to flourish in their life. If you want to reduce the anxiety and stress of the people closest to you, you need to thrive. You need to succeed. And I'm here to help.

We all need support, life brings planed and unexpected change, transitions and requited growth. My clients may feel the pressure of perfectionism, feeling not-good-enough or second guessing themselves, feeling stuck in life. They may have physical or emotional pain and a big stress overload. Often feeling pulled in too many directions, with too many responsibilities, caring for too many projects or people. They can feel lost or adrift, that life is not progressing or as meaningful or happy as they had hoped. Grief & loss build up & worry about the ability to change can immobilize so they often feel stuck & afraid in life.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
